CELEBRATING 50 YEARS
1962, July 20
Grand Opening
Mayor Dail smashes a bottle of champagne across the bow of the ship-model cocktail lounge, the Jolly Roger Room, during the grand opening ceremony of the OceanHouse on East Mission Bay. Over 3,000 people attend to assist hotelman Del Webb in celebrating his new $3 million OceanHouse, fashioned after an English sailing ship moored in Tahiti.
1964
Hilton Takes Over
Hilton purchases the OceanHouse from Del Webb and renames the property, The San Diego Hilton Inn.
1965
Hilton Tower Building
In 1965, Hilton adds the tower building, a 127 room 8-story high rise building that offers magnificent views of Mission Bay.
1970
Planes Land at Dentist Convention
Planes land on PCH (now East Mission Bay Drive), in front of the San Diego Hilton Inn for a National Dentist Convention. A call was quickly made to the dentist that treats the mayor of San Diego, who called the mayor. While no one knows what was said, the mayor decided to have the police block the road!
1975
Property Name Change - San Diego Hilton
Hilton updates the name of the resort to the San Diego Hilton in 1975 to communicate that the property is a resort as opposed to an inn.
1978
Cargo Bar Grand Opening
Hilton updates the original Jolly Roger to include a dance floor and larger bar, quickly becoming a hot spot for single San Diegans. The lounge sticks with its original décor including nautical attractions such as a ship’s wheel and binnacle, ship models, port holes and authentic fittings and rigging.
1980
Introduction of the Lady Hilton Yacht
The luxurious Lady Hilton, a 47-foot pleasure yacht, departs the private marina daily for excursions on Mission Bay. Morning coffee cruises, afternoon champagne cruises and whale watching in certain months become available for all guests.

Property Name Change - San Diego Hilton Beach & Tennis Resort
To capitalize on the resort's waterfront location and large tennis facility, Hilton decides to update the name of the resort to the San Diego Hilton Beach & Tennis Resort. Resort brochures start to include a recreation guide and focus on the full resort experience.
1985
Introduction of the Hilton Queen
Hilton introduces The Hilton Queen, a boat devoted exclusively to private social events and conferences. As she plies the unforgettable waters of Mission Bay, the Hilton Queen re-creates the feeling of an old Mississippi riverboat. In addition, every Sunday, the Hilton Queen hosts a large brunch for guests and San Diegans alike.
1988
Barron Hilton & the San Diego Chargers
As a favorite property of Barron Hilton, who owned the San Diego Chargers and spent much of his leisure time in San Diego, Hilton has a helicopter pad placed in the parking lot to come and go as he pleased. Barron hosts a Super Bowl party on the property where he pulls out all of the stops for the players and VIPs from all over the United States.
1995
$25 Million Property-Wide Renovation
On July 27th, 1995, the renovation is unveiled during a large celebration with the help of Mr. Eric Hilton and local celebrity Ron Reina. A bottle of champagne is smashed as it was during the original grand opening of the property and fireworks line the night sky as the event comes to a close.
2000
